These are Camponotus certainly (carpenter ant). I expect it's Camponotus nearcticus given the lack of golden hair on the gaster, and occasional reddish trunk - can anyone confirm or correct?

In my experience Camponotus novaeboracensis is usually distinctively red or even a burgundy red thorax, sometimes orange. If the coloration is limited to the thorax I would say C. novaeboracensis too....

The size alone is pretty telling. Most Camponotus range from 8-16mm, but Camponotus nearcticus are much smaller. So Dr. Ant is correct (like usual ).
